Today was a drawing day at cemetario de San Michele...I think is what it's called in Italian. Cemetary Island. Being there away from all the tourists and crowds of people was very relaxing. We wandered around by ourselves for almost 3 hours, drawing and taking pictures. I was creeped out at first. I don't like being in cemetaries. But then after my drawing of some temples or crypts, not sure what kind of buildings they were, I was a little more comfortable. It was like by me drawing quietly in that space, I didn't feel like I was intruding, I was just enjoying the visual, and it kept my mind off of the dead. It was also humbling to be in that place for so long. There were so many graves there and a lot of them as early as the 1800's, to as late as last week. I saw one of a 5 month old baby that had just died a few days before we got here. It was sad, but it's reality I guess.
I only did one drawing on the nice paper and did 2 sketches in my book. Drawing is so frustrating to me. I always want a nice finished product before I even start on it. We had a discussion/crit around 5:00 p.m. after everyone had a few hours to recharge. One of the things we talked about was how we expect to have perfect paintings or drawings everytime. It just isn't possible, and I don't know why I let myself get worked up over it. It's like the other day at Doge's Palace, Matt said something along the lines of, "you already know you "can't" make Doge's Palace", nobody could recreate it absolutely perfectly, so I just have to give it my best shot. In all the drawings i have done I haven't been able to "finish" any of them, so Matt challenged me to push my pictures all the way to the edges while I am here. He said to indulge my "inner Sonia."..If you don't know Sonia from WSU art program you won't understand what I mean.
After our discussion we were free to do what we wanted the rest of the night. I was getting a little homesick and wanted to go out to eat. Everyone was cooking dinner so I was invited to go eat with Matt, Josh, Cathi, and Julia. It was a lot of fun and the food was really delicious. Cathi was the most entertaining of all :) She has a very interesting mind. We were there for over 3 hours but it went by really fast.
