How To Feel Miserable As An Artist

(or what not to do, underline any that currently apply)

1. Constantly compare yourself to other artists.
2. Talk to your family about what you do and expect them to cheer you on.
3. Base the success of your entire career on one project.
4. Stick with what you know.
5. Undervalue your expertise.
6. Let money dictate what you do.
7. Bow to societal pressures.
8. Only do what your family would love.
9. Do whatever the client/customer/gallery owner/patron/investor asks.
10. Set unachievable/overwhelming goals to be accomplished by tomorrow.

Commandments of Happiness (and other rules to live by)

Inspired by Gretchen Rubin's, "The Happiness Project."

1. Be Grateful. Gratitude brings freedom from envy.
2. Don't gossip
3. Lighten up
4. Enjoy the fun of failure
5. Cut people slack
6. Don't expect gold stars
7. Keep it simple
8. Spread joy
9. If you want it done, do it yourself
10. Act the way you want to feel
11. Don't judge
12. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good
13. Turn complaints into thankfulness
14. Be self-forgiving
15. Hate and contention are slippery slopes
16. Change your life without changing your life
17. Make time for fun, and reading
18. Exercise for sanity, not vanity
19. It is easy to be heavy; hard to be light
