Day 11

GIARDINI - ILLUMINATIONS, LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA

Today was the day that we finally went to Giardini. I thought the other pavilions were art overload-but this was art on its own magnitude. Sculptures, videos, paintings and media I have never seen before. It really makes me think about my own art and how I impact the world with it. These people are intellectuals, engineers, writers, builders, craftsman, philosophers. Artists have it all and they can be it all, and I truly believe it. After experiencing only half of this trip, I have a new way to look at art and the art world. It's not just pictures. It's so much more than that and it contributes so much to society that more people need to appreciate.

We started the day early, meeting downstairs on the first floor at 9:30 a.m. We took the vap over to Giardini, and as soon as we got inside we were kind of free to go where we pleased until about 2:00 p.m. I think most people wanted to go off on their own, but Lil and I walked around together.

We saw (some more in depth than others, of course-we will have to go back this week!):

-Danimarca (Denmark)
-Vezia (Nordic)
-Russia
-Japan
-Korea

-Germany
-Canada
-France

-Australia
-USA

Organ playing ATM machine -USA pav
-Isreal

Video piece -Israel

Most of the countries had their own exhibitions full of art, and on top of that the main show, "Illuminations," was packed full or art. I don't even know if I saw all of it because there was so much work. My favorite national pavilions today were Japan, Korea, France. My least favorite were Canada, Australia, Russia.

Japan was the stand out of the day for me. I wish I had my video camera to record the whole room. It was basically a dark room with all kinds of mirrors. You couldn't really tell the floor from the wall because it was all connected and projecters were playing a video all around the room. It was hard to describe, but to me it felt like an evolution was happening. The images were animated or drawn and they would move and mutate through the spaces. It was pretty mind boggling. You could step into a corner where mirrors surrounded you and felt as if you were in a tunnel of animation. The sounds were pretty intense too.
